Tooth loss is a serious issue that can be caused by many different situations, including gum disease, facial trauma, tooth decay, and more. When you lose your teeth, your smile, the functions of your mouth, and your quality of life are all negatively impacted. Basic things you once did with ease become incredibly difficult. Replacing missing teeth is essential for maintaining the functions of your mouth and restoring your quality of life. Legato Dental Centre can replace missing teeth with dentures and partials.

What are Dentures?

Dentures are a traditional solution used to replace missing teeth. They have been in use for hundreds of years. Also called full or complete dentures, dentures are used to replace an entire arch of teeth. Over the years, dentures have undergone numerous changes. These changes have greatly improved the appearance of dentures, making them look much more natural than the dentures used even just a few decades ago.

Today, dentures consist of acrylic resin or porcelain teeth, which can be made to look exactly like real teeth, rather than the perfect appearance of the older styles of dentures. These teeth are set into a rigid, acrylic base. The base is colored to match the color of your natural gum tissue and is also provided with a texture that mimics your natural gums. These features provide you with a much more aesthetic restoration to your smile while also restoring the functions of your missing teeth.

Dentures are a removable prosthesis. The base is designed to sit directly on your gums, and your restoration relies on this tissue for support. They are made from an impression of your mouth, which is taken following the extraction of any remaining unhealthy teeth.

So, What are Partials?

Partial dentures, commonly just referred to as partials, are a type of denture that is used when you are missing a section of teeth, but the rest of the teeth in the arch are still perfectly healthy. This avoids the need to extract perfectly healthy teeth but provides you with restoration when you are missing too many teeth for a traditional bridge.

Partial dentures are designed similarly to regular dentures, consisting of acrylic resin or porcelain teeth set in an acrylic base. This type of denture, also created from an impression of your mouth, also has metal clasps, which help to provide the restoration with additional support.

Denture Care

Dentures, both complete and partial, are removable and should be taken out every night to be taken care of. After taking your denture out, it should be brushed gently with a soft bristled brush and either soap and water or a denture cleaner. Do not use toothpaste, as it contains abrasives that can cause microscopic scratches. After cleaning your dentures, set them in a glass of water or denture cleaning solution and leave them to soak overnight.

Soaking them keeps them moist, preventing them from drying out and warping. Before going to bed, it is important that you also take care of the rest of your mouth, brushing and flossing your healthy teeth as well as brushing your gums and other intraoral tissues. With proper care of your dentures and the rest of your mouth, you can ensure that your dentures can function properly.

If you have suffered tooth loss, dentures and partials are common, effective ways to replace those missing teeth, giving you your life back. Call Legato Dental Centre at (250) 860-5253 today to learn more and schedule your appointment.
