The Best Tips for Wearing Dentures Immediately After an ExtractionIf you are having teeth extracted and then immediately receiving dentures, there are some things you can do at home to help manage your pain and discomfort and make your transition more tolerable.

Extractions may be necessary if you have gum disease or decayed teeth and the good news is that you do not have to wait for your gums to heal before you begin wearing your dentures.

Wearing Dentures After Extractions

One major advantage to having dentures immediately following an extraction is that you do not need to appear in public without teeth. Following these tips will ensure that your transition goes smoothly and before you know it, you will be confident sharing your new smile with everyone you meet!

After you are home, you can expect some bleeding; this is normal but should only last a few hours. A gentle salt water rinse will help reduce swelling, soothe irritation and help you heal. Be careful not to rinse aggressively as you do not want to dislodge any of the blood clots and interrupt the normal healing process.

You may remove your dentures two or three times during the day to rinse them off prior to doing a salt water rinse. A teaspoon of salt mixed into a cup of warm water and gently rinsed through the mouth is enough.

After about four days, you can use your fingers to gently rub the gum tissue. This massaging will increase blood flow and help alleviate swelling and irritation.

Avoid hot liquids and foods high in acid for at least the first 24 hours, and be careful to eat only soft foods for the first week following your extraction. Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption for at least 48 hours. If you have any questions or concerns or are experiencing unusual pain or discomfort following your extraction, please call us right away.
