Issues with Traditional Dentures
Dentures have been around for hundreds of years. Over the years, they have undergone many changes, designed to improve their appearance and their functionality. They are still a very popular treatment today. Despite being popular, they still have several disadvantages. These include:
Dental implants are a modern solution for replacing missing teeth. This treatment uses small titanium posts, which are surgically placed into the jawbone. As you heal from the procedure, your jawbone fuses to the posts in a process called osseointegration. This process stabilizes the posts in your jaw, which enables them to provide secure support for your replacement teeth.
Dental implants are an incredibly versatile treatment. They can replace an individual tooth, several consecutive missing teeth, or even an entire arch of teeth. There are options available to replace teeth without the need for a bone graft. There are even implants that are used to stabilize dentures, including a locator overdenture.
What is a Locator Overdenture?
A locator overdenture is a treatment that uses dental implants to provide stability for your denture, called an overdenture. This treatment is common for stabilizing a lower denture, where the risk of slipping around or falling out is greater. Your overdenture is similar to a traditional denture, consisting of acrylic resin or porcelain teeth that are set into a gum colored acrylic base. The base is designed to snap into place on the dental implants that are placed in your jaw. The implants have locator abutments placed on them, which are button-like fixtures that secure your denture in place. Locator attachments are available in different sizes, which allows us to create a tighter or looser fit depending upon your needs. For instance, older patients with less manual dexterity may require looser fittings, which enables them to more easily remove their overdentures for nightly cleaning.
